Unique commercial role for a lawyer to join a highly-regarded professional body in a Corporate/ Commerical Counsel position. This role will be based in Edinburgh with hybrid/remote working also available. The role will be a fixed-term position for 12-15 months.

Role Profile:

  • Responsible for assisting with the delivery and effective communication of appropriate and practical corporate legal/compliance advice, contract management and project support to internal colleagues and, as required, member volunteers and third party stakeholders.
  • Reporting to the Head of Legal Services, the role may include line management responsibility for other staff within the General Counsel group.

Key accountabilities:

  • To assist with the management and delivery of corporate legal work in support of the Corporate Plan objectives.
  • To provide advice on a broad range of legal, compliance and regulatory issues, including but not limited to property law, competition law, intellectual property and data protection matters.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring effective and timely legal input to enable the implementation of commercial contracts and management of legal and compliance risk.
  • Assist with audit, corporate governance and insurance matters.
  • To advise on the handling of commercial and member disputes.
  • Sharing knowledge of law and commercial best practice with colleagues across the organisation, as required.
  • Managing the procurement of appropriate external legal support and advice, as required.
  • To implement effective procurement and contract/supplier procedures which are proportionate to the size of the business and its activity, taking account of financial, legal and reputational risk;
  • To champion proper procurement process and contract/supplier management across the organisation, providing support and guidance as appropriate.
  • To upskill and train contract managers in the conduct of procurement exercises, commercial negotiation and cradle to grave contract and supplier management;
  • To advocate the use of the BOrganised contract management tool, overseeing its use and ensuring it is used to full potential;
  • Take a leading role in the maintenance a professional outward facing commercial image (contract templates, procurement form templates, ITT templates, RFI templates, single initial point of contact, etc).

Candidate Requirements:

  • Experienced qualified lawyer with a commercial background from in-house, private practice or public sector background. 
  • Ideally with experience of contract negotiation and supplier management.
  • Experience of procurement exercises;
  • Experience of corporate legal work, in private practice and/ or in-house.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong commercial and strategic awareness.
