Legal Counsel- IT, Cyber Security & Data Privacy - England

Leading global defence company is looking to hire an additional legal counsel to advise on IT, Cyber Security and Data Protection Law. This role will be based in Farnborough with an expectation that you will work in the office 2-3 days a week and the remaining time will be remote working (if desired). 

Role Profile:

  • You will be responsible for providing legal advice to ensure that the use, procurement and provision of IT systems and the handling of information and personal data across is compliant with applicable legal requirements (including both regulatory and contractual) and to mitigate legal risks arising in respect of associated issues.
  • This role will provide you with the opportunity to work closely with a broad range of stakeholders, developing strong business relationships and working as a true business partner within one of the world’s leading global Defence, Security and Aerospace companies.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing clear and concise guidance relating to use of new technology and IT services by the business and communicating of that guidance, and associated policies, throughout the lines of business and functions.
  • Supporting lines of business and functions in implementing all aspects of the data protection compliance strategy.
  • Ensuring a continued and effective response to IT, information (including personal information), cyber security and software related regulatory and contractual obligations, including responding to changes to those obligations and the wider threat environment.
  • Ensuring legal risks associated with the storage and hosting of the information, IP and data that the Company is responsible for are appropriately mitigated.
  • Negotiation and drafting of relevant contractual terms in a manner that documents an acceptable allocation of risk for the Company and, where applicable, supporting commercial and procurement functions in the negotiation and documentation of those contractual terms.
  • Promoting understanding and awareness of risks related to IT and personal data legal issues across the businesses and functions.
  • Providing support and guidance to DP Leads on complex matters, escalating to the Head of IT and Data Law where there is the potential for regulator involvement.
  • Ensuring ongoing data protection compliance.
  • Delivery of training for DP Leads within business units and functions.
  • Advising on all legal matters surrounding data protection/privacy.

Requirements:

  • Qualified solicitor or barrister (UK or Australian / New Zealand (QLTT)) 
  • Experienced in: Drafting, negotiating and advising on contracts related to procurement and use of IT systems and services, including outsourced IT solutions, and cloud-based SaaS, IaaS and PaaS offerings as both supplier and customer.
  • Experience of advising international organisations on data protection issues on a cross jurisdictional basis.
  • Excellent technical understanding of commercial contracts, with experience of IT contracting and outsourcing.
  • Good knowledge of UK and European data protection laws.
  • Due to security clearance, candidate are required to be UK Nationals or alternatively been resident in the UK for 5+ years to be eligible for this role. 

Additional Skills Required:

You should have strong interpersonal skills, particularly experience of working, and being able to communicate effectively, with stakeholders at a range of levels within the organisation. You will be pragmatic so as to devise sensible legal solutions to ensure compliance which are consistent with effective business operation.
